Court Date #1

Yesterday was the first court date for my "speed exhibition" ticket. It was pretty much a non-event. My legal counsel (Christine's mom) and I met with the DA for a few minutes and they offered to reduce it to a "reckless driving" ticket and 8 points. Ummm, no thanks. So we set a date for a pretrial conference, where hopefully they see that the ticket is completely baseless. Stay tuned for details from the March 23rd conference.

  2. In court, you should educate the cops and the judge on the difference between speed and acceleration. You weren't (allegedly) demonstrating speed, you were (allegedly) demonstrating acceleration. Is there an "acceleration exhibition" law? No, I didn't think so!
Who ever said that basic high school physics didn't have real life applications?

  3. I love the fact that they pressure CSA cases to quick finishes because the courts dockets are overbooked and yet they are prosecuting this because they didn't offer a reasonable bargain.

  4. The ticket mentions nothing about speed. In fact, I never broke the 55 MPH speed limit, and I'm pretty sure the cop know that. The law is a little vague (for obvious reasons), which makes it all the more annoying.
The thing that I really don't like is that they're basically giving me a ticket for the manner in which they perceive I accelerated. Last time I checked, my car does not have an accelerometer, and I don't think I've seen any "Acceleration Limit" signs. So, officer, I went from a stop light (0 MPH) to 55MPH. How fast should I accelerate? (Please express your answer in m/s/s.) Maybe in court I should toss various objects and see if the cop can estimate their rate of acceleration.
Keep your calendar clear, I may need to call you as a physics expert witness. :)

  6. They'd probably have a lot fewer traffic cases go to court if they eliminated the laws that people feel they need to fight on principle. I was going 58 in a 55? Ok, give me the ticket. I was "driving too fast for conditions"? Sez who?
