Crested Butte

When you plan a ski trip a few months in advance, it’s pretty much a roll of the dice as to whether or not the weather will cooperate. Sometimes (usually), it doesn’t work out. Other times, it works out better than you could imagine. Our Crested Butte trip fell into the latter category.

Some friends of mine from New York emailed me last fall to see if I wanted to get in on a ski trip with them. As I’m usually the one who has the unenviable task of organizing such things, I was happy to let somebody else do the legwork on this one. Christine and I had already been discussing a trip to Crested Butte, so the timing on this deal worked out great. My friend Mari got us hooked up in a really nice (pet friendly) condo with ski-in/out access. And the access was legitimately ski-in/out-able (unlike other places I’ve been that have claimed that type of access). (We stayed in the Keystone building at the San Moritz condos.)

Our first day on the mountain was marginal snow-wise, and terrible visibility wise. The next two days, however, we're filled with sunshine and deep powder. Due to avalanche danger, they didn't open up the whole mountain on our second day, but that just meant that our there would be fresh powder waiting for us on our third day. I'm glad our east coast friends lucked out with some amazing conditions. We had so much fun killing ourselves on the steep powder runs, while deftly avoiding cliffs.
